Our Kid's Martial Art Class Structure

Jiu-Jitsu for Kid's Ages 4-7
&
Ages 8-13

Introduction

Picture
Our classes are divided into four phases. This can vary from class to class, depending on the topic. The Kids Class (Ages 8-13) has a curriculum divided in 20 Units. The Kid's Class (Ages 4-7) features 15 Units.

These units include all of the most essential Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques and will provide them with an incredible understanding of the art, it’s psychology, and strategies.

Ages 4-7

The younger children (Ages 4-7) do not practice or learn submissions. They are very dangerous and take great moral responsibility. The chance of accidental injury with the younger children is greater when learning submissions too early.

A 5 year old does not need to know how to arm bar or choke a child in a kindergarten classroom. If they need to protect themselves they can do it with grappling and positional control.

Ages 8-13

This class offers a more technical approach to the Art of Jiu-Jitsu while still keeping the class fun and engaging. Children will learn Self-Defense on three levels...

• Protecting themselves.
• How to be a better bystander and member of the community.
• Understand the psyche of a "Bully".

Older children (Ages 8-13) will practice them and learn to cautiously apply them in class and in a Self-Defense situation.
They will learn the moral responsibility and understand when it would be necessary to apply and when merely controlling the person may be enough.

Class Structure/Layout

  1. Warm Up
    1. We begin by bowing in, which is a common introduction and greeting in most traditional martial arts to show respect to one another. We then transition into a warm up consisting of movements to enhance their coordination, agility, strength, and help develop the vital and essential body mechanics related to Jiu-Jitsu.
  2. Essential Question and Introduction
    1. After the warm up is complete we will gather the students together and the instructor will present the underlying topic or “Essential Question” of the day’s lesson. We will also use this time to go over important life related topics and allow the children to express their thoughts and creativity.
  3. Technical Training
    1. This is where we cover the techniques of the particular unit of the day. We will try to have the techniques work together in a good sequential flow to help their reflexes and will also try to add review of techniques from previous classes.
  4. Grappling/Sparring
    1. After technical training, the students have the opportunity to grapple or spar live with their partners. This is where they feel the struggle, chaos, and will try to execute their techniques against a resisting and skilled opponent. This is an element of Jiu-Jitsu that makes the art so powerful. The children will know without a shadow of a doubt what works and what doesn’t!
